Law Practice Plus: Solos & Entrepreneurship (Live Chat)

24 Hours

On Oct. 15 during 24 Hour of Rebels, Carolyn Elefant and Lisa Solomon joined us for a live chat.

Solomon and Elefant discussed "law practice plus," the pursuit of one or more other businesses, in addition to law practice, at the same time.

Law practice plus is, they said, a way to diversify a solo's income streams, both to grow income and to serve as a buffer in case work in a main practice area slows down.

Meet our guests:

Lisa Solomon, a sole practitioner in Ardsley, NY, was one of the first lawyers to recognize and take advantage of the technological advances that make outsourcing legal research and writing services practical and profitable for law firms. Since 1996, Solomon has concentrated on assisting lawyers across the country with legal research and writing services. Through Legal Research & Writing Pro, she teaches other attorneys how to start and run practices as contract lawyers.

Carolyn Elefant is a solo practitioner focusing on energy law in Washington, D.C. She's an early adopter of technology for her law practice, having hand-coded her firm's website in 1995 and joining the first generation of lawyer bloggers in 2002. Elefant blogs at MyShingle and is author of the book, Solo by Choice: How to Be the Lawyer You Always Wanted to Be.

Given the mutability of Scottish spellings over time, I have often wondered if Carolyn Elephant has any family connection to Carolina Oliphant (Lady Nairne), who created so many wonderful Scottish songs for posterity in the 18th and 19th Centuries.

Sorry.  “Elefant.”  (Those who have seen the Lewes crestbadge know McLeods have had our spelling issues for many centuries).

That was a cool program. Both speakers did a great job and as I’ve noted before the way the ABA Journal is leading the charge on technology - right down to the way the program was broadcast tonight - is outstanding. Go Rebels.

I wish I had as interesting a lineage as #1 suggests, but alas, I believe that the name Elefant comes from Germany.  I enjoyed the program as well - thanks Mazyar for participating.
